John Williams: Suite from Far and Away
Max Bruch: Scottish Fantasy
Amy Beach: Gaelic Symphony
The York Symphony Orchestra pays tribute to the rich history of Ireland and Scotland. From the Irish-based movie Far and Away, John Williams blended traditional Irish music with symphony for this suite. Award winning violinist Rachel Barton Pine takes center stage during Max Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy. Bruch incorporates familiar Scottish folk tunes: “Auld Robb Morris,” “The Dusty Miller,” “I’m a’doon for lack o’ Johnnie,” and “Hey Tuttie Tatie.” Famed for being the first symphony published by an American female composer, Amy Beach’s created Gaelic Symphony in the romantic style with influences from Irish folk songs.
Arrive early for a pre-concert talk led by Assistant Conductor Rebekah O’Brien, free to all ticketholders!
