Don’t miss the Jazz in the City debut of Philly Jazz musician John Swana on the EVI (Electronic Valve Instrument), alongside Steve Meashey on bass and Jeff Stabley at the drums. In the video above, Swana demonstrates the EVI, how it works and plays.

“This is a chance for music fans to see world-class musicians playing the highest quality music in a top-notch setting”, says Artistic Director Jeff Stabley, percussionist and adjunct faculty and instructor of Jazz Studies, Percussion, and Improvisation at York College. “This season, you’ll hear traditional and non-traditional jazz, as well as jazz versions of pop music. Anything from Louis Armstrong to Hip-Hop!”
Tickets are just $10 in advance, $15 day of, and students are free with ID.
This event often sells out in advance, so get your tickets early.
Although students are free, tickets should be reserved in advance to be assured of a seat.

Born in Norristown, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia, John Swana took up the trumpet at the age of 11. He was drawn to jazz at the age of 17 after hearing Dizzy Gillespie, and the interest developed into a passion while he was in college. There he began transcribing the solos of Freddie Hubbard, Clifford Brown, Miles Davis and Tom Harrell.
Swana has performed, recorded and/or toured with the Mingus Big Band and other well known jazz greats such as Don Patterson, Shirley Scott, Mickey Roker, Stanley Turrentine, Tim Warfield, Eric Alexander, Sam Newsome, Brad Mehldau, Peter Bernstein, Ravi Coltrane, Ralph Bowen, Terrel Stafford, Seamus Blake, Robin Eubanks and many others. Swana has also been heard with Freddie Hubbard, Phil Woods, Ronnie Cuber, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, Clark Terry, Frank Foster, John Faddis, Slide Hampton, J.J. Johnson, Bob Minzer and Charlie Persip.
