More about JAZZ IN THE CITY

Jazz in the City was established in 2011 to bring high-quality, professional jazz to downtown York, PA. The first performance was held on October 7, 2011, featuring trumpeter Ronnie Waters, pianist Jimmy Waters and bassist Eric Washington in the Studio at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts (then the Strand Capitol Performing Arts Center) where it has called home for the past 15 years.

Early planning meetings were held with notable community leaders, including York Mayor Kim Bracey, to firmly establish the monthly performance series and draw fans into Downtown York on First Fridays. Jazz in the City concerts continue to present diverse styles of music, including traditional big band, fusion, funk and jazz interpretations of classical and pop music.

Jazz in the City has regularly featured local jazz musicians, including pianists Kirk Reese and Steve Rudolph, bassists Steve Meashey and Hassan Shakur and more, as well as international artists vibraphonist Tony Miceli and York’s own Tim Warfield on sax and fusion band Extremity.

Jeff Stabley, percussionist and adjunct instructor of Jazz Studies, Percussion and Improvisation at York College of Pennsylvania, has served as the Artistic Director for Jazz in the City and has been found behind the drums for every concert since its inception.

“It is a profound joy in my life to be a part of Jazz in the City,” stated Stabley. “The team at the Appell Center is wonderful to work with, and I am blessed to play with such amazing musicians. But most of all, I am honored by the audience’s support all these years.”
