To commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month 2026, the Appell Center has collaborated with prominent York County community members to curate an exclusive film series. Each feature portrays the struggles, triumphs and challenges faced by notable individuals in significant periods of time. They are stories that simply must be told and retold… stories that continue to influence those that experience them.
Each film screening will open with remarks by its curator, detailing why they think the movie should be shared with the York community and how it has significantly impacted their lives.
ABOUT THE FILM: A MILLION MILES AWAY
Inspired by the real-life story of NASA flight engineer José Hernández, A Million Miles Away follows him on a decades-long journey, from a rural village in Michoacán, Mexico, to more than 200 miles above the Earth in the International Space Station. With the support of his family, José’s drive & determination culminates in the opportunity to achieve his seemingly impossible goal.

MEET YOUR COMMUNITY HOST
This film was selected by Jackie Hernandez, Community Navigator at Tec Centro York, where she is dedicated to helping individuals and families overcome barriers to education, employment and self-sufficiency. With many years of experience in social services and community outreach, Jackie works closely with students and community members to connect them with essential resources, workforce development opportunities and supportive services that promote long-term success.
Jackie earned a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies from Penn State University. Her education, combined with her passion for serving others, has allowed her to make a meaningful impact throughout York County by building strong community partnerships and advocating for those in need.
Jackie also serves as the Treasurer of the Hispanic Coalition of York and a Board Member of the Catholic Harvest Food Pantry. She is an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where she enjoys volunteering and serving her community.
Jackie believes that meaningful service begins with compassion, respect and faith. Her favorite quote reflects the values that guide both her personal and professional life: “The Lord’s plan is better than mine because He is in complete control of my needs.”
