JAZZ IN THE CITY: A GREAT DAY IN HARLEM – Concert & Film Screening
Reserved seating
Join us for this special Jazz in the City concert in the historic Capitol Theatre, where Steve Rudolph (piano), Hassan Shakur (bass) and Jeff Stabley (drums) will perform music from artists or songs featured in the 1994 documentary A Great Day in Harlem, followed by a screening of the Oscar-nominated film.
A Great Day in Harlem was directed by Jean Bach (1918-2013), a press agent, radio producer, jazz aficionado and fixture of New York’s jazz scene. Through interviews and archival material, the film tells the story of Art Kane’s photograph of the same name taken for Esquire magazine in Harlem on August 12, 1958. Assembled on 17 East 126th Street, between Fifth and Madison Avenues, the photograph is famous for capturing 57 of the era’s jazz greats in one photo. It is a feat that has not been replicated since as a snapshot of its time and during the heyday of the music.
