The Appell Center for the Performing Arts is committed to providing first-class service and accessibility for all our guests. If there is something we can do to make your experience more enjoyable during your visit, please contact one of our staff members or volunteers.
When to Arrive
The Strand and Capitol Theatre lobbies open one hour prior to each live performance. The Capitol Theatre lobby opens 30 minutes prior to the start time of each film.
Digital Tickets
In addition to traditional printed tickets, we offer a Digital Ticket option for scanning from mobile devices upon entry at your event. Click here for more information on Digital Tickets and delivery.
For Your Security
For the safety of our audiences, performers and staff, all patrons must show a valid event ticket to gain entry into the facility. All bags will also be checked upon entering.
Prohibited items include:
- Guns, knives, weapons of any kind pepper spray, fireworks or explosive devices and replicas of any type of weapon are strictly prohibited inside the building and will have to be returned to your vehicle
- Any outside food or drinks, including water
- Professional cameras
All exterior theater doors will be locked 30 minutes into a performance. All patrons who exit the facility during a show will be asked to show their ticket for reentry. If you are meeting guests prior to the show, you will need to do so outside of the theater.
*Please arrive early to allow yourself extra time for check-in and security measures.
For Your Fellow Patrons
To support an enjoyable experience for you and those around you:
- Please minimize talking during the show.
- Respect photo/video policies and – when permitted – you use your phone discretely.
- If you want to stand or dance, please do so in front of your seat and without impacting the view or space of those around you.
- Please be considerate of those in the audience who have allergies and/or multiple chemical sensitivities and refrain from wearing perfume, cologne, or other scented products.
Audio & Video Recording Devices
Unless specifically noted, audio and video recording of any kind during a performance is strictly prohibited. Confiscation of equipment and penalties for copyright infringement may be enforced in the event of a violation.
Photo Use Policy
By entering the premises of Appell Center for the Performing Arts, all guests age 18 and over grant permission for their likeness to potentially be used in photographs, videos or other digital media for the theatre’s promotional and marketing purposes, including but not limited to website, social media, print materials and advertisements.
Guests who do not wish to have their photo used for such purposes should notify a staff member upon arrival. Those guests will be provided a visible identifier (e.g. wristband) to make photographers aware of their preference.
Concessions
Concessions are available in both the Strand and Capitol Theatre lobbies, including snacks, soda, water, coffee and full bar service. Beverages are permitted in both theaters unless otherwise noted. Select concessions are also available at most Studio events. No outside food or beverages are permitted.
Assistive Services
Our theaters both offer ADA-compliant seating. Please note: there is an elevator for balcony access in the Strand Theatre. There is not an elevator for balcony access in the Capitol Theatre.
Assisted-listening and closed captioning devices are available for select events. Please see an usher when you arrive or call the Box Office in advance for any needs you may have.
Sign language interpretation is also available. Please allow at least two (2) weeks’ advance notice to request sign language assistance.
For guests who have sensory processing needs:
Appell Center for the Performing Arts has partnered with KultureCity® to enhance our ability to assist and accommodate guests with sensory needs. Our goal is to provide an inclusive experience for all guests during all events. We strive to raise awareness of the needs and challenges faced by individuals with sensory processing needs by supplying our staff with annual training and by offering the resources and accommodations below to our guests.
KultureCity® Sensory Bags containing special KCVIP badges, feeling thermometer, fidget tools, and noise-canceling headphones are available for checkout (at no cost by leaving an ID) at our box office or at the Capitol Theatre concessions stand. Sensory bags can be used for all abilities of all ages.
Weighted Lap Pads are available upon request (at no cost by leaving an ID) at our box office or at the Capitol Theatre concessions stand.
Strobe-Canceling Glasses are available upon request (at no cost by leaving an ID) at our box office or at the Capitol Theatre concessions stand.
Headphone Zones (loud areas) are located in the performance spaces in the Strand and Capitol Theatres, and the Studio.
Quiet Space is available next to the Donor Lounge on the second floor of the Strand Theatre, or in the West Classroom next to the Studio. There is not a dedicated Quiet Space in the Capitol Theatre. Please let a staff member or volunteer know if you are looking for a Quiet Space, and they will help you find it.

Service Animals
Service animals, as outlined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), are always welcome at all venues within the Appell Center for the Performing Arts. The ADA defines a service animal as an animal that has been trained to do work or perform tasks for an individual with a disability. Dogs or other animals whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support do not qualify as service animals under the ADA.
Public Restrooms
Restrooms are conveniently located inside both the Strand and Capitol Theatres and the Studio.
Child Booster Seats
Child booster seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis, courtesy of Matthew and Brooke Shorb. Please request assistance from an usher when you are being seated.
Smoking
The Appell Center for the Performing Arts is a smoke-free facility. Smoking and vaping are prohibited in all areas within the building without exception.
Military Discounts
We offer a $2 discount on all CapFilm ticket purchases for US Military Personnel/Veterans and up to three of their guests. Tickets must be purchased by the military personnel or veteran at the Appell Center Box Office by showing military ID. Some restrictions may apply.

Parking Garages
Thanks to the York City General Authority, all downtown York parking garages are FREE after 8PM on weekdays and all day on weekends. We encourage our patrons to take advantage of the no-cost parking options within convenient walking distance of our theaters at 50 North George Street in York (corner of George and Philadelphia Streets).
Private Lots & Street Parking

On-street metered parking is available. The downtown area uses ParkMobile for contactless parking and payment. Check out more at https://parkmobile.io/.
The St. John’s Church Parking Lot off North Beaver Street is a 24-hour paid lot utilizing electronic pay processing through the ParkPoolr app that can be downloaded for free from the Apple App Store. Android users must scan the QR code posted on site to enter vehicle and payment information.

Ticketing FAQs
What are the box office hours?
From July 1 – August 31, Box Office staff are available from 10am – 2pm Monday through Thursday by phone and in-person at 50 N. George Street, York. The box office will be closed Fridays during this time. However, we will be open Friday, August 9 to handle Broadway and Family show single ticket sales. On event days, the Box Office will be open two (2) hours prior to live performances and one (1) hour prior to films. Online sales are available 24/7/365 at appellcenter.org.
How will I receive my tickets?
Guests purchasing tickets online and through the Box Office (by phone or in-person) have several delivery options. You may choose to receive your tickets in the mail, have your tickets held at Will Call or use our digital ticket option. Mailed tickets will arrive no later than two (2) weeks in advance of the performance. If you have ordered tickets for a performance that is less than two (2) weeks away and have not received your tickets, please contact the Box Office at 717-846-1111 for assistance.
How do I access my Digital Tickets?
- Go to https://tickets.appellcenter.org/account/upcomingevents
- If you are not already logged in, log into the account used to purchase the tickets.
- Click on ‘View Tickets.’ Please note digital tickets can be accessed in your account 48 hours prior to performance.
- You can now select “Add to Wallet” to move your tickets into your Apple or Google Wallet!
- Show your device with digital tickets at the door for entry.
How far in advance can I access my Digital Tickets?
Digital tickets will be available 48 hours prior to the performance start time. To access digital tickets, log into your account and choose ‘Upcoming Shows’ on the left navigation pane.
How can I share my Digital Tickets?
Digital tickets are intended to be scanned from your mobile device upon arrival and when the entire party is arriving and coming into the theater at the same time for a performance. If you are purchasing tickets to give as a gift or need to provide to others in your party prior to the show, we suggest changing your delivery method to ‘Hold at Box Office’ or ‘Standard Mail.’ Please note that there is a $3.00 per order fee for ‘Standard Mail’ delivery.
Can I change my delivery method to printed tickets?
Absolutely! You can change your tickets to printed tickets during purchase by changing your delivery method. If you have already purchased your tickets, you can request the change by calling the Box Office at 717-846-1111 or emailing boxoffice@appellcenter.org.
What if I forgot my username or password?
If you do not remember the email address used for your login, call the Box Office at 717-846-1111 or email boxoffice@appellcenter.org, and we will provide you with the correct email address or update the email address if it is no longer valid.
To reset your Appell Center account password, you can use the Forgot Your Password self-service tool under ‘Login’ at appellcenter.org or call the Box Office at 717-846-1111.
Can I use my money “on account” to order tickets online?
On account funds can be applied to eligible online purchases at checkout. For assistance, please contact the Box Office at 717-846-1111.

Does the Appell Center offer children’s tickets?
Select shows have the option for children’s tickets. All patrons, regardless of age, need a valid ticket for entry.
What items are available at concessions?
Appell Center concessions provides a range of beverages, including alcoholic options, and a variety of bite-sized snacks. Unless stated otherwise, drinks and snacks can be enjoyed inside our theaters.

How is the Appell Center funded?

How should I dress/is there a dress code?
The Appell Center does not have an enforced dress code. Our concerts, comedy and film programs tend to be more casual. For the York Symphony Orchestra, Broadway productions and other select performances, business casual is popular.
