Appell Center to Honor Erda and Bob Erdos with the Inaugural Patron of the Arts Award

Apr 23, 2018

The Appell Center for the Performing Arts is honored to announce Erda and Bob Erdos as its first-ever recipients of the Appell Center Patron of the Arts Award, sponsored by PeoplesBank. The award will be presented to Erda Erdos at the Appell Center’s inaugural GALAvant fundraising event on Saturday, May 12 in tribute to her and her late husband’s vision and unyielding commitment to the success of the Appell Center and the performing arts in York County.

Erda and the late Bob Erdos, who passed away in March 2017, have been instrumental in the inception and the on-going success of the Appell Center (formerly Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center) organization. In the 1970s, Bob Erdos served on the Ad Hoc Committee that established the vision for the new performing arts center in downtown York and purchased the Strand and Capitol Theatre buildings. Erda Erdos faithfully served on the Board of Directors for thirteen years over two terms (1986-1992, 2006-2011) and sat as Board President from 1992-1993. Erda’s knowledge of foreign and independent film helped spearhead the creation and operation of York Flicks and Capitol Cinema Sundays. Erda personally researched and helped select each film in the York Flicks series and continues to be an advocate for film in the Capitol Theatre. Bob’s jazz expertise made them both invaluable assets on programming and special event committees. Bob also facilitated programs by the likes of Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks and the Louisiana Repertory Jazz Ensemble.

Erda and Bob Erdos have remained one of the Appell Center’s most generous and loyal donors. In addition to their continual support in the form of membership and event attendance, the Erdoses participated in every capital and sustainability campaign. Erda’s philanthropy through her beloved mother, Rhoda, and the Theodore and Renee Weiler Foundation also contributed to numerous campaigns, namely the major renovation and expansion in 2000.

“The Appell Center has a rich history of generous supporters in the York Community. We are deeply honored to pay tribute to those who have given so much to us with our new, annual Appell Center Patron of the Arts Award. Erda and Bob Erdos are the perfect choice for the inaugural award recipients as their generosity, dedication and performing arts expertise not only shaped who we are today but serve as an extraordinary example of how cultural leadership can transform a community,” said President & CEO of the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, Todd Fogdall.
